About "The Project Side"

"The Project Side" is the brain child of miniature wargamer, hobbyist, video gamer and semi-professional writer D J Driver.

Originally created and updated back in 2013 as a hobby blog titled "The Art of Warhammer", Driver made his final hobby post under this name in 2015 having made the decision to focus full time on his work life, leaving little time for blogging and writing wargaming articles. In 2024, Driver once again made a decision to focus more on his true passion for writing and reimagined "The Art of Warhammer" as not just just a hobby and wargaming site, but extending to other communities and personal interests such as video gaming and, of course, writing. As such the blog was rebranded "The Project Side" to make the site far more accessible to a wider audience and less laser focused on the hobby aspect of the site.

Driver's mission with "The Project Side" is to deliver quality articles and content for his readers, whether that be with in-depth painting tutorials, thrilling narratives and short stories or videos/live streams for everyone to enjoy. He is always looking for new ways to share his passions in the most exciting and entertaining ways possible!

About the author

D J Driver was born and raised in the suburbs of East London near Epping Forest. At an early age he developed a fondness for video gaming after playing his cousin's NES gaming system and became a full on gaming fan after receiving a SNES gaming system for his fifth birthday. Since then he has come to consider video games not just a means of entertainment, but an artform when in the hands of skilled developers. At time of writing he lists his top 3 gaming franchises of all time as Mass Effect, The Legend of Zelda and Baldur's Gate.

Meanwhile Driver's father, a hard working IT specialist who worked in the finance sector, enjoyed table top roleplaying in his spare time, rolling dice with friends as he played through the amazing adventures of Dungeons & Dragons using miniatures he himself had painted, and regaling his son of the many scenarios his characters had experienced in game from the tragic to the downright hilarious. D J was enchanted by these fantastical stories as well as the models his father had produced from his sessions and he wished for nothing more than to be able to tell stories of his own to people one day. It would also one day serve as the catalyst that pushed D J to purchase his first Warhammer 40k box set back in 1996.

Today, D J Driver still resides in East London with his wife and daughter and is working on writing his first novel when he is not painting, building or kicking back with a control pad in his hands.

Who's the white haired guy on the site's logo?

That's Major Mercenary! He was one of the lead protagonists in a wargaming parody flash animation series called "Plastic Hammer" that Driver created for Newgrounds back in 2001. The series ran for just 4 badly animated episodes. A fifth episode that was intended to bring the series to a new animation standard was in the works, however all the assets for the animation save one were lost and the project was never finished. The picture in the logo is the last remnant of that project and now Major stands proudly as The Project Side's mascot.

Though the third and fourth episodes were sadly lost to time when Newgrounds moved on from flash animation, you can still watch the first two episodes of Plastic Hammer on there (episode 1episode 2) as well as the excellent Plastic Hammer XTREEM! spin-off created by Zelig (known for the Knights of the Dinner Table animation).
