How to paint hyperphase weapons

The first time I painted one of my Hyperphase Blades for the first time I was really happy with the result. The idea was to give the weapons the effect of having super heated edges that could slice through anything, very fitting for the lore of my Dynasty. Today I will run through step-by-step how to achieve this effect.

Paints used in this tutorial:

  • Black Templar Contrast (Citadel)
  • Khorne Red (Citadel)
  • Evil Sunz Scarlet (Citadel)
  • Trollslayer Orange (Citadel)
  • Firedragon Blight (Citadel)
  • Flash Gitz Yellow (Citadel)
  • White Scar (Citadel)
  • Yellow Glaze (Two Thin Coats)
  • 'Ard Coat (Citadel) - Optional

Step 1.
Base the entire blade with two coats of Black Templar Contrast.

Step 2. Paint the blade edge with two thin coats of Khorne Red.

Step 3. Using some heavily watered down Khorne Red, paint the engraved parts of the weapon, wiping off any excess paint with a finger.

Step 4. Paint the blade edge with two thin coats of Evil Sunz Scarlet, leaving some of the layer from step 2 showing.

Step 5. Using some heavily watered down Evil Sunz Scarlet, paint the engraved parts of the weapon, wiping off any excess paint with a finger. You should leave some red from step 3 showing through towards the outer parts of the weapon.

Step 6. Paint the blade edge with two thin coats of Trollslayer Orange, leaving some of the layer from step 4 showing.

Step 7. Using some heavily watered down Trollslayer Orange, paint the engraved parts of the weapon, wiping off any excess paint with a finger. You should leave some red from step 5 showing through towards the outer parts of the weapon.

Step 8. Paint the blade edge with two thin coats of Firedragon Blight, leaving some of the layer from step 6 showing.

Step 9. Using some heavily watered down Firedragon Blight, paint the engraved parts of the weapon, wiping off any excess paint with a finger. You should leave some orange from step 7 showing through towards the outer parts of the weapon.

Step 10. Edge highlight the blade with Yriel Yellow.

Step 11. Using some heavily watered down Yriel Yellow, paint the central parts of the weapon engraving, wiping off any excess paint with a finger.

Step 12. Paint the tip of the blade with two thin coats of Skull White.

Step 13. Paint the blade edge with one coat of Two Thin Coats Yellow Glaze.

Step 14. Clean up the black areas with another coat of Black Templar Contrast.

Step 15. Highlight the black areas with Khorne Red.

Step 16. (Optional) Paint the blade edge with one coat of ‘Ard Coat. This will give your weapon an otherworldly, shimmering look.

Here are some I did earlier!
